Character and word counter

Paste your text and instantly see how many characters (with and without spaces), words, sentences, paragraphs and lines it has, plus the reading time. The tool also compares it with the limits for page titles, meta descriptions, X posts and Instagram captions. The text never leaves your browser.

Reference limits

  • Page title (SEO)0 / 60
  • Meta description (SEO)0 / 160
  • X post0 / 280
  • Instagram caption0 / 2 200

Title and meta description are recommendations: Google truncates by pixel width, not by character count.

What a character counter is for

Many texts have limits: a page title and meta description, a post caption, an ad message. Counting before you publish avoids cut-off sentences.

The word count helps size an article, a product description or an email.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your text in the box.
  2. Read the totals for characters (with and without spaces), words, sentences, paragraphs, lines and bytes, and the reading time.
  3. Compare with the reference limits: the bar turns red when you go over.

Reference limits

  • Page title (SEO): around 60 characters. It is a recommendation: Google truncates by pixel width.
  • Meta description (SEO): around 160 characters. Also a recommendation, not a rule.
  • X post: 280 characters on standard accounts.
  • Instagram caption: 2,200 characters.

Characters, words and bytes

The tool counts each Unicode symbol as one character, so an emoji counts as 1. Words are sequences separated by a space or line break.

Bytes (UTF-8) show the size of the text in memory: accented letters and emojis take more than 1 byte. For most social and SEO limits, what matters is the character count.

What this tool does not do

  • It does not fix spelling or grammar.
  • It does not measure pixel width: a title may or may not fit even below the reference character count.
  • It does not count exactly like each platform: some count emojis, links and accents differently.
  • It does not store or send your text: everything happens in your browser.

Frequently asked questions about character and word counts

How do I count the characters of a text online?

To count the characters of a text, paste it in the tool box. The total characters, with and without spaces, appear instantly, along with words, sentences and paragraphs.

How many characters should a meta description have?

Google does not set a fixed number. A common target is around 160 characters so the description shows in full in most cases; the tool shows that reference limit.

What is the ideal length of a page title?

Around 60 characters is a common reference, because Google truncates titles by pixel width. Shorter text has less risk of being cut.

How many characters can an X post have?

On standard accounts, the limit is 280 characters per post. The tool shows how many are left or how many you are over.

How many characters fit in an Instagram caption?

An Instagram caption accepts up to 2,200 characters.

Does the counter count spaces?

It shows both totals: characters with spaces (the whole text) and characters without spaces. Most platform limits count spaces.

How is an emoji counted?

The tool counts each Unicode symbol as 1 character, so a simple emoji counts as 1. Some platforms count emojis and links differently, so leave some margin.

How is the reading time calculated?

Reading time divides the word count by 200 words per minute, a reference for silent reading, and rounds up. It is an estimate, not a measurement.

What is the difference between characters and bytes?

Characters are the symbols you see. Bytes are the space the text takes in UTF-8 encoding: accented letters and emojis use more than 1 byte. Most social and SEO limits use characters.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. The count happens in your browser and the text is neither sent nor stored.
